The Cubicle Diet: Healthy Eating from 9 to 5

Here at Buffalo Office Interiors we love to snack! Catch us at any time of the day and at least one of us is nibbling away. If you are confined to a “9 to 5” job as well, you can probably agree that keeping on track with healthy eating habits can take more work than your biggest project.  Between pastry-laden breakfast meetings and pizza parties, maintaining a balanced office diet is difficult.  But don’t get your pantsuit in a bunch just yet. Snacking happens, and that’s a good thing- when you let Mother Nature lead the way!

The most important aspect of eating healthy at work is planning ahead so you are not stuck gorging on the first thing in your path. Your forte is fitting in all the to-dos on your list, so make the time to prioritize preparing a delicious and satisfying array of healthy snacks. Fill snack-sized bags with dried fruit and nuts, cut up fruit or vegetables, veggie chips, whole grain crackers, popcorn, or hard-cooked eggs. Keep them handy in your desk or briefcase. Avoid temptations and bypass the vending machines as well. Vending machines may be one of the most convenient food sources in your office or while you are running errands, but they are often the most diet-damaging. Instead of opting for vending machine goodies that are lacking nutritional value, keep a ready supply of single-serving yogurts, cheeses and pudding snacks in your office refrigerator.

Another great way to inject both healthy variety and convenience into your mid-day snacking is to sign up for a subscription service. For a small monthly fee, services like NatureBox and Healthy Surprise will send you a care package filled with healthy goodies-everything from crunchy granola and trail mix to apple chips and hearty peanut butter “cookies.” The snacks inside the shipments are small and perfect for grabbing on the go, and many of them even have options for special diets, like vegan and gluten-free. The best part? You don’t have to put any thought into the snacks, but you know they’re going to be healthy. And hey, who doesn’t love a surprise package every month?

So while you may find it difficult to eat healthy in the office, it can be done! With a little pre-planning you are less likely to sabotage your healthy dietary efforts when you feel the need to snack at work.
